Makati City, Philippines – On Friday, September 6, PNB Holdings Corporation (PHC), in collaboration with the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) and Autism Society of the Philippines (ASP), organized the “Access for All Workshop” at SPACES PNB Makati Center. The event sought to promote inclusivity by educating employees and property stakeholders on making their spaces more accommodating to persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The workshop, attended by PHC employees, tenants, security and housekeeping personnel, and other key stakeholders, addressed critical topics such as understanding different types of disabilities, implementing accessible design features in buildings, and the legal rights of PWDs. There was special emphasis on accommodating individuals who are blind, visually impaired, or have autism.

Mr. Jayme Mariño, a representative from NCDA, underscored the importance of corporate involvement in promoting inclusivity. “Accessibility is not just a legal requirement, but a moral obligation. By making our spaces more accessible, we create environments where everyone, regardless of ability, can participate fully in society.”

Architect Jaime Silva, a blind architect from the United Architects of the Philippines, shared practical insights on how even small adjustments can make a big difference. “For someone who is blind like myself, tactile surfaces, audio indicators, and proper signage are life-changing and allow people like us to navigate the world with dignity.”

Ms. Cecille Sicam, from the Autism Society of the Philippines, highlighted the unique needs of people with autism, particularly in busy public spaces. “Simple changes, like creating quiet zones or having staff trained in handling sensory sensitivities, can make all the difference for someone with autism. These thoughtful adjustments make environments more comfortable and welcoming.”

The event also encouraged participants to rethink how they can apply these principles in their respective roles and to be able to assist PWDs better within their facilities. Ms. Karlu T. Say, PHC President, stressed the importance of creating a culture of inclusivity: “Our commitment to accessibility goes beyond compliance—it’s about breaking barriers and cultivating a culture of inclusion. It’s up to each of us to ensure that everyone feels welcome and valued in our spaces.”

The “Access for All Workshop” was well-received by attendees, who came away from the session motivated to apply their learnings.

PHC will hold a second run of the workshop in October 2024 at the PNB Financial Center, continuing its efforts to promote accessibility and inclusion across its properties.
